Symposium Friday 19th March 13:30 All Dolled Up… ...For A Nights T.V. Watching that explores the nature of the representation of men who prefer to sleep with inanimate women and dolls. The seminar will compare similarities in a ‘new wave’ of gender representation by looking at the documentary Guys & Dolls and the film Talk to Her, both of which aired consecutively on the same night. Claire Kearns 14:30 Jesus Christ, the Original Hellraiser: The use of Horror, Religion and Masochism in The Passion of The Christ and Hellraiser. An examination of how and why the two texts use very similar techniques to put the spectator into a state of masochistic identification.  Andrew G. Robinson 15:00 Bond, Bourdieu and Cultu/re   A short case study in the cultural consumption of cult fiction. This presentation will apply the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu to fiction and films that make up the Bond series. Discussion Topic led by Jen Fox •Compare the representations of female robots (gynoids) during the cold war, how are they represented? •Explore why they are represented in such a way, compare the similarities. •Highlight the differences, what are they? •What was going on socially at this time between America and Russia? •Touch upon communism, how it is said to be more ‘woman friendly’ than capitalism. •Touch upon the difference in special effects; did loosing the space race affect Russian economy? Discuss the possibility of this being a result of their failure to exploit and utilise gender ideology in domestic and work spaces.
